A Day with Serge Attukwei Clottey

In Labadi, Accra, a day with Serge Attukwei Clottey begins inside a studio dense with material, colour, movement, and questions. His work draws from Ghana’s histories, everyday objects, coastal communities, family memory, migration, and the pressures of contemporary urban life. Known for his use of yellow plastic jerrycans, or Kufuor gallons, Clottey transforms ordinary containers into sculptures, installations, performances, and social gestures. In the studio, these materials become more than fragments of plastic. They carry stories of water scarcity, exchange, labour, reuse, and displacement. The studio feels like an archive in motion: a place where objects are collected, cut, stitched, tested, and reimagined. It is here that Clottey builds his world, not only by making images and forms, but by asking how art can speak to community, memory, and the conditions of daily life in Accra.
