James Town

James Town is one of Accra’s oldest districts, shaped by a long coastal history, dense everyday life, and a strong local identity. Around James Fort, the lighthouse, and the beach edge, the district brings together fishing, trade, housing, colonial remnants, and public space in a tightly layered urban fabric.

Over time, shifts in maritime activity and post-independence urban development have changed the area’s economic role, yet James Town remains intensely inhabited and socially active. Wooden structures, improvised extensions, nets, boats, and domestic spaces sit close to the sea, where work and daily life overlap.
