Location: Nanjing, China
Set within the green landscape of Pearl Spring near Nanjing, the Sifang Art Museum by Steven Holl Architects is shaped around movement, perception, and shifting views. The building draws on the spatial qualities of Chinese painting, where distance, mist, water, and landscape are experienced gradually rather than in a single perspective.
At ground level, black bamboo-formed concrete walls create a sequence of parallel spaces and garden passages. Above them, a lighter gallery volume rises and turns, guiding visitors through a suspended chain of views. The path through the museum moves from straight passages to a winding upper gallery, ending with a framed view toward the city of Nanjing in the distance.
