National Theatre of Ghana

Opened in 1992, the National Theatre of Ghana is one of Accra’s most recognizable cultural landmarks. Designed by Chinese architects Taining Cheng and Xianghan Ye, the building was developed with Chinese support and in cooperation with Ghanaian and Chinese experts. Its monolithic form contains performance halls, auditoriums, exhibition spaces, foyers, terraces, and circulation areas. Inside, shaded passages, unexpected corners, and elevated platforms create moments where light, structure, and views across the city come into focus. The theatre remains an important venue for dance, music, drama, exhibitions, and public events, reflecting both its cultural role in Ghana and the history of collaboration behind its construction.
