Green Square Library and Plaza

Green Square Library and Plaza by Stewart Hollenstein, in association with Stewart Architecture, reimagines the library as both civic interior and public ground. Set largely below the surface of Sydney’s Green Square, the building preserves the plaza above as an open urban room for gathering, play, and everyday life. Reading rooms, social spaces, a sunken garden, amphitheatre, and educational facilities are arranged beneath and around the square, while skylights and glass pavilions bring daylight deep into the library. Rather than standing as a conventional object in the city, the project is embedded in the life of the neighbourhood as a quiet and generous public space.
