Location: Châtenay-Malabry, France
Located on the former École Centrale site in Châtenay-Malabry, the École Voltaire by a+ samueldelmas architectes is conceived as a low-carbon school closely connected to its landscape. Set between the Parc de Sceaux and the Coulée verte, the building is embedded into the slope and organized through a series of terraces, each linked to a playground and a part of the programme.
The school brings together nursery and elementary classrooms, sports spaces, after-school facilities, and a central kitchen. Wood, raw earth, vegetation, and recycled concrete define the character of the project, creating a warm and robust environment for children while reducing the need for additional finishes.
Built from bio- and geo-sourced materials, the school also works as a pedagogical tool. Its rammed recycled concrete, timber structure, earth-hemp partitions, and raw earth finishes make the construction itself visible, turning everyday spaces of learning into an example of more frugal and responsible architecture.
