Zeitz MOCAA

Zeitz MOCAA by Heatherwick Studio transforms Cape Town’s historic grain silo into a museum for contemporary African art. Once used to store and grade maize from across South Africa, the building stood as a massive piece of industrial infrastructure on the city’s harbour front. After its decommissioning, the concrete silo was not erased, but carefully reimagined as a new cultural landmark.

Rather than treating the existing structure as a shell, Heatherwick Studio carved the museum from within. The tightly packed concrete tubes of the former silo were cut open to create a dramatic central atrium, where the building’s industrial past remains visible in the curved surfaces and heavy materiality of the concrete. Around this carved void, galleries, circulation spaces, and public areas unfold across several levels.

The project gives new life to a structure once dedicated to storage and trade, turning it into a place of memory, encounter, and artistic exchange. Zeitz MOCAA is both a museum and an act of transformation: a former machine for grain becoming a vessel for culture, light, and contemporary African imagination.
