The Stage for Haduwa Arts & Culture Institute

Located in Ghana’s Central Region, on the Atlantic coast between the fishing town of Apam and the village of Abrekum, the bamboo pavilion for Haduwa serves as a performance stage for independent theatrical experimentation and as a gathering space for the local communities.
Made entirely of bamboo — a widely available but rarely used building material in Ghana — the structure creates a new presence along the beach. Its roof rises and descends with the landscape, opening itself to passers-by and framing a flexible space for performance, rehearsal, meeting, and everyday use.
During the day, it becomes a trading stop for fish and fruit merchants, a shelter for fishermen working by the sea, and an informal meeting place at the edge of the village. At night, it takes on another life, becoming a quiet place for encounters, conversations, and lovers.
The project has become a local focal point: light, fragile, and open to change. It gives form to a cultural space that is not fixed or monumental, but shared, temporary, and closely connected to the daily life around it.
