Location: Shanghai, China
A renovation project by Kengo Kuma and Associates located on the Huangpu River in Shanghai. The design transforms a large brick shipyard built in 1972 into a cultural and commercial complex with a theatre and retail spaces. At the heart of the building, a vast 20-metre-high, 150-metre-long void recalls the scale of a ship, while the existing concrete columns preserve the industrial character of the site. A translucent façade of porous bricks and stainless-steel wire adds a delicate, changing texture, and the theatre opens toward the river through a dramatic glass backdrop.
